The Small Cross That Never Left My Pocket

A quiet companion through years of fire, loss, and long nights

For me, it was a simple aluminum pocket cross. No shine. No engraving. Nothing special at first glance.

Some things look small but carry more weight than we realize. Yet for decades, it followed me into places most people never have to go.

Into burning homes. Hospital rooms. Accident scenes. Dark nights when faith felt thin and strength felt borrowed.

It was always there. Not loud. Just present.

Where It Came From

A gift from someone who lived his faith quietly

I received this cross in 1981 from a man named Willard Long.

He was a janitor where I worked. A humble man with a limp from polio, a steady smile, and a habit of praising God while sweeping floors.

He did not preach.

He did not try to impress anyone.

He simply lived his faith with consistency and joy.

One day he placed that cross in my hand.

At the time, it felt like a small gesture.

Looking back, it became one of the most meaningful gifts of my life.

From that day forward, it rode in my pocket everywhere I went.

What It Reminded Me Of

God’s presence does not disappear in hard places

Over the years, that cross went with me into situations that tested everything I thought I knew about strength.

Law enforcement calls. Fires. Trauma. Loss.

Moments when you learn very quickly how fragile life really is.

There were times I felt empty. Times I questioned. Times I was simply tired to my core.

And every time my right hand slipped into my pocket, I felt it there.

A quiet reminder.

Not that life would be easy.

But that I was not walking through it alone.

Faith did not shout.

It whispered.

Stay. Keep going. I am with you.

Why I Am Sharing This With You

Because we all carry something heavy

You may not carry a cross in your pocket.

But you carry something.

Responsibility.

Memories.

Grief.

Pressure.

Long days that follow you home.

Sometimes it feels like too much.

Sometimes it feels like you have drifted farther than you ever meant to.

I have felt that too.

And I have learned something simple.

We are never as far gone as we think we are.

God has a way of staying closer than we realize.

Even when we cannot see it.

A Moment To Pause

Just breathe for a second

Picture something small that reminds you of who you are and whose you are.

A verse.

A prayer.

A cross.

A quiet moment before the day begins.

Let it ground you.

Let it slow you down.

Let it bring you back when life feels scattered.

Sometimes the smallest reminders carry the greatest strength.

If This Story Spoke To You

I would be honored to send you a pocket cross of your own

If carrying a simple reminder like this would help you, I would be glad to mail one to you at no cost.

Something you can keep close on the days that feel long.
